In de overgang van ‘biotopia’ naar ‘technotopia’ raakt de mens steeds verder vervreemd van haar eigen natuur. Müge Yilmaz is een onderzoekend kunstenaar die zich richt op onze kwetsbaarheid in verhouding tot onze omgeving. Ze onderzoekt archetypen die in de loop van de eeuwen via verschillende religies en mythologieën zijn verspreid met als doel om bescherming op te roepen. Op de vensters van een lokale snackbar plakte zij 2 jaar geleden voor het project Ringsporen van Bureau Postjesweg symbolen waar een beschermende kracht aan wordt toegekend. De eigenaar, bekend om zijn open, verbindende houding naar álle groepen Amsterdammers, ook bij onderlinge spanningen, heeft ze al die tijd laten hangen. Het was het begin van haar groeiende collectie ‘Apotropaic Devices’. Apotropaeïsch betekent ‘onheil afwendend’. Iedereen kent wel afbeeldingen ter bescherming tegen het boze oog, zoals twee leeuwen of ‘Hamsa’, de hand van de godin.

De afgelopen twee jaar breidde zij dit project uit met ruimtelijke sculpturen van bewerkt hout. In de voetsporen van archeologen verzamelde zij dergelijke symbolen binnen een enorme verscheidenheid aan geloofssystemen en culturen. Van uit steen gehouwen figuren uit opgravingen in Çatalhöyük in Turkije tot Neo-Assyrische reliëfs en amuletten uit de Midden-Oosterse en Mediterrane tradities. De sculpturen waren te zien op andere plekken, van de Istanbul Biënnale tot Kunstfort Vijfhuizen en Nest in Den Haag. Bij Bureau Postjesweg is de collectie voor het eerst als geheel te zien, samen met een nieuwe presentatie op het raam.

De installatie is iedere avond na zonsondergang van buitenaf te bekijken in de verlichte Showroom en overdag op donderdag t/m zondag van 14:00-17:00 of op afspraak te bezoeken. Vrijdag 18 en woensdag 30 juni zijn er avond openstellingen van 20:30-23:00 uur. 30 juni, de laatste avond, is Sarah van Sonsbeeck special guest met haar project ‘I burn for you’

In the midst of transitioning from ‘biotopia’ to ‘techtopia,’ human beings are becoming more alienated from their own nature. Müge Yilmaz is a research based artist whose work centres our vulnerability and how it relates to our environment. She researches archetypes whose goal is to protect, which have been spread through time by way of many different religions and mythologies. Two years ago, for the project Ringsporen by Bureau Postjesweg, Yilmaz put up protective symbols in the window of a local chip shop. The owner, known for his welcoming attitude and association with all kinds of locals - even during moments where tensions arise between groups - has kept them up ever since. It formed the start for her growing collection of ‘Apotropaic Devices.’ The term apotropaic signifies ‘that which averts evil.’ Everybody is familiar with images that offer protection from the evil eye, such as dual lions, or ‘Hamsa,’ the goddess hand.

In the last two years Yilmaz expanded the project with sculptures made from carved wood. Following in the footsteps of archeologists, she collected different symbols from a wide variety of religions and cultures. From stone carved figures found in excavation sites in Çatalhöyük in Turkey, to Neo-Assyrian reliefs and amulets from Middle Eastern and Mediterranean traditions. These sculptures have been on display at multiple locations, from the Istanbul Biennial to Kunstfort Vijfhuizen and Nest in The Hague. At Bureau Postjesweg the collection can be seen in its entirety for the first time, combined with a new window-based presentation.

The installation will be visible from the street each night after sunset in the illuminated showroom, and available thursday until sunday 14:00-17:00 or by appointment for visits during the day. Friday June 18 and Wednesday June 30 there are evening openings from 20:30-23:00. 30 June, the last night, Sarah van Sonsbeeck is special guest with her project ‘I burn for you’
