About the project:
Le Bateau is a long-running collaboration between artists Laëtitia Delaunay and Aurélia Noudelmann. In 2021, they descended on Buurtwerkplaats Noorderhof with a dream: to carve out a place in nautical history as women. This resulted in the development and construction of a boat consisting of discarded beer kegs with much involvement from students, friends and neighborhood residents. With its unusual appearance, the boat proved to be a “floating social design meeting place” and has had a place in several local events, at Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and is now resting in Belgium as part of De Verbeke Foundation’s collection. Several spin-off results emerged, including: a feminist, activist children’s book, a documentary about their cruise through the Netherlands and a captains logbook about the social making process.

The most important outcome was the will to build an even bigger, better boat in 2024, with much more room for input from others: ‘De Walvis’.
In doing so, women and the LGBTQ+ community are especially invited, as Le Bateau wants to open up crafts, techniques, roles and places that have traditionally been mostly assailed by men by being active in them. Creating activism with a high degree of positivity and collective fun.
The exhibition will be an overview of Le Bateau 1.0 and will show the design and start-up phase of Le Bateau 2.0 ‘The Whale’. A true Kick Off exhibition full of interaction, to also involve as many people and groups as possible in the upcoming phases of the project: construction in the spring, with weekly programming and activation of the object in the summer, by participating in events on and around the Sloterplas. With Dutch Design Week, Sail Amsterdam and a sailing trip to France ahead.
